History: Built beginning in the 1920's, The N5 became the main cabin car of choice to bring up the rear markers of many of the Pennsylvania Railroad's freights, coal drags, ore drags, and many other train types. They were built so well that many outlived the PRR, and made it into the hands of Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak, and the hands of quite a few short lines.

These Cars were found bringing up the markers on many PRR, Penn Central, and later Conrail freights until the laws requiring the use of Cabooses was removed from the books in the late 70's/ Many still exist in various states of preservation and even in private ownership, with a very select handful still doing the job they were designed to do well over fifty years ago: provide a place for the conductor to handle the trains paperwork and switching lists, keep the brakemen out of the weather, and provide a warm place for the rear end crew to watch for signs of problems
